does that mean we are over taxed? Why don't we get a say in how that money is spent and I don't think it should just be plopped into paying down the deficit. We need money pumped into education and health care etc. The position for who should oversee how this money is spent is vacant too...something wrong with this picture don't you think?

RKO yes, we're still in debt, who isn't but it comes down to the same decisions, what do we need to pay it down or to put it towards what's needed? Things are breaking down that need attention. Imagine if the USA used all your tax dollars JUST to pay off the deficit, the government would never invest anything in the people, and what they need, which is affordable housing, schooling, more money so hospitals have more beds and you aren't parked in a hallway after major surgery etc.

I am trying to figure out how to explain a surplus...the FEDERAL government has an operating budget which they forecast for the year to operate and run. A lot of the money is downloaded to the provinces, who are always looking for more money from the Feds.

Now the Federal government has at least 6 billion SURPLUS...meaning they collected more from us than they needed, and yes it COULD go to paying down the NATIONAL debt, but it's a matter of priorities as well, as part of the annual budget also takes into account paying down the national debt too. Danged politics are always a pain to explain! :~)

Yes we as Canadians I'm sure are not aware of the fact that our Government has MILLIONS in surplus. It's never enough here in Canada but one party which I wont' mention donated $1.0million dollars to a cricket club, in order to get votes.
Our Government spends money on things we don't need they are frivolous and overtax us Canadians, why do they need a big majority of our INCOME tax dollars, that extra can be used for our families.
Yes it's time to fight as Canadians to let our Government know that this tax crap has got to end. Where is everyone.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying that the government has $6.4 billion lying around, but there's still a budget deficit that hasn't been paid down?
If that's the case, then you don't really have a surplus, do you? You just have some cash that hasn't been used to pay off debt yet. It would be like saying, "I have a $10,000 surplus in the bank, but I owe $8,000 on my credit cards." In that case, you would only have a $2,000 surplus, wouldn't you?? -RKO- 08/25/07

Because we are being run by rich, greedy a--holes. By the way we are more in debt than any other time in history. Bush has borrowed billions from other countries and they keep using money we don't have to pump up the stock market. I would say a depression is in our future.

I feel we are overtaxed.Put some of it to the deficit but then some should go to programs like healthcare and education as well as affordable housing and programs for the disabled so they can live with dignity.

Yes, it does mean that you are overtaxed. The economist Arthur Laffer described the relationship between taxes and government revenue with his famous Laffer Curve.
