does that mean we are over taxed? Why don't we get a say in how that money is spent and I don't think it should just be plopped into paying down the deficit. We need money pumped into education and health care etc. The position for who should oversee how this money is spent is vacant too...something wrong with this picture don't you think?

RKO yes, we're still in debt, who isn't but it comes down to the same decisions, what do we need to pay it down or to put it towards what's needed? Things are breaking down that need attention. Imagine if the USA used all your tax dollars JUST to pay off the deficit, the government would never invest anything in the people, and what they need, which is affordable housing, schooling, more money so hospitals have more beds and you aren't parked in a hallway after major surgery etc.

I am trying to figure out how to explain a surplus...the FEDERAL government has an operating budget which they forecast for the year to operate and run. A lot of the money is downloaded to the provinces, who are always looking for more money from the Feds.
Now the Federal government has at least 6 billion SURPLUS...meaning they collected more from us than they needed, and yes it COULD go to paying down the NATIONAL debt, but it's a matter of priorities as well, as part of the annual budget also takes into account paying down the national debt too. Danged politics are always a pain to explain! :~)
