I don't believe that you can sue them. They get innundated with many, many calls coming in. Some 911 centers are understaffed, and people call in for nonemergencies.

I worked in a casino surveillance dept and had to call 911 once or twice every week. It got so they recognized my voice after a while.

Yes, I do believe you. It happened to me. When I lived in Vegas, my son was very sick, and I had no way of getting him in to ER (where they would still have been an hour or more before checking him out.) I called 911 and was on hold for what seemed to be hours. I think, really, it was for about 5 minutes.

depends what you were on hold for. if they asked you to hold while they got a supervisor or paged the drivers that were coming to get you, then no. But if they put you on hold just b/c, then you should make a big deal about it and call the media. You can probably sue. I work at a 911 center and during training class they show us all the things that 911 ppl (called EMD's) do that mess up a call and a lot of times result in a pts death. You wouldnt believe howw many mistakes are made. Its sad, but yea.....

You need to tell us more information. By hold did you mean that they made you wait AFTER the call was answered? Or when you called it took them a long time to answer.

Generally, NO. If all calltakers are busy, then they wont be able to answer your call.

If during the call, they put you on hold for a unnecessary reason and your baby suffered permanent injury/death, then maybe. It all depends.

Heck, I am a observer at my cities 911 center. and yesterday we took a a 2 year old having a seizure. = )

Put you on hold?! For what? I think you should call the 911 center and ask for the person in charge and see what they say! I mean that is crazy! Did they put you on hold after you told them what was wrong and to send an ambulance or before? I think I would be pissed!

I doubt it, what if they put someone else on hold that's even worse off? Just spread the word to people NOT to use 911 for stupid things!!! I've never used it in my life and I've been robbed at gunpoint, found a body, etc. I always just look up the police number and save the 911 lines for people with HUGE emergencies.

I've heard of that...being put on hold by 911, which is ridiculous. Was your child OK? Don't know that you can sue if you don't have damages.

I would suggest, before you get all 'I'm gonna make you pay for this', that you think for a moment if there might have been emergencies of a higher level that needed to be addressed first.

Did the kid die? Have any serious side effects? If he or she is okay now, you have no cause of action. You may not have liked what they did, but if it didn't cause any harm, you can't sue. Well, you CAN, but it would be thrown out as frivolous. And you can be FINED for that!

Well I don't think you should sue them because thats lame, also you don't know if they were super busy and had lots of calls coming in from other people who were on the line before you.

That's terrible. I would put it in the papers for sure. I doubt you'll be able to sue though. I hope the operator who put you and your child on hold doesn't ever do that to anyone again if you catch my drift.
