Yes, especially after your neighbor turns you in to the town building department.

Most likely, here in Canada any structure over 100Sq. Ft requires a building permit, but 1 quick call to the local township office should help 1st thing monday morning.

If you're like me, you'd just put it up without saying anything. As another poster mentioned, taxes go up if you get caught. And you probably won't. I've had properties for over 17 years without any assessments.

It's a hard question. Most people don't bother with permits. It can cause problems if someone complains. But it can also make your taxes go up if you do get a permit.

So you have to consider the odds that someone will complain, and the odds that your taxes will go up if you get the permit.

The worst that can possibly happen is a fine. There is no way you would go to jail for it.

i don't know about CA but here IN you have to have a permit to build any structure. it differs by county and state. and if you get an assessment later or sell the property which process the title and they find you didn't get the permit, they can fine you or make you take down the building if it doesn't meet codes. in response to other poster, here you don't need a liscensed electrician or plumber as long as you do the job up to code and can pass the inspection. many times inspection isn't required for a non-attached building. your county building inspector can answer questions about what is code and not code.

Put that saw down.
That is a question best left to the townhall to answer. relying on word of mouth could end up having you to move that monster shed from one location to another because you failed building codes. Don't take for granted what others have said. Get it in writing from the towns building codes enforcerment unit.

Id say to be on the safe side- yes. You dont want to be halfway thru building it and the inspector comes round and says " Take it down or be fined".
I live in town and i definitly need one, the other loop they add is i have to have a health inspector make sure im not placing it over my septic system - im sure most peeps do it w/o a permit, but i wouldnt- cause i dont feel like paying fines.

USA:

Yes, you do need a permit. And you have to have a licensed electrician do the wiring. It has to be done by code. Same with plumbing.

where i live if you are pouring concrete...(making it a permenant structure) you have to get a permit....you can get away with it if you build it up on poles......which is very easy because they consider it a removable structure
