If they are homeless and asking for money, do they really have room to decide what you choose to give them? And what items that are given are meant as pity? And if you give them money aren't you pitying them as well? I say give them soup and bread, that way you know they are actually benefiting off of what you are giving them, instead of wasting money on booze or cigarettes. Give them a blanket, or some socks. Whatever you give them, I doubt they wont appreciate it.

DJ_NICK, that is a gereralization. not all homeless people buy drugs with the money that they are given. sure giving them food may be the wisest, but why not acctually try and help them get their life back into place. obviously somewhere in there life previously, they mad an extremely bad desicion that caused their lively hood. not all are like though. most people in the states when they see a homeless person, they are like, oh thats terrible. and then they don't do anything. it is up to the people in the country to help out the weak. obvioulsy they are too selfish or feel that they can't do anything. atleast you could do is make sure they are healthy and send them to a shelter or something, instead of giving them money outta pity or just so that they will quite bothering you. that is sad on your part. why don't you try and think about how you would feel if you were in their shoes, and don't get smart alec with me and say i can't because i never i will never be like that. because you don't know what could happen in the next minute, or hour, or week or month or years. hun its called karma. and instead of giving them a can of soup or just some spare change that you "don't need". but that spare change to them is their life. its how they survive. and the some of homeless people who buy drugs do that because it numbs the pain. i mean if you did give them a can of soup, how would they open. then they would need to get a can opener and a spoon or something. im not trying to be funny either. that just causes them problems. why don't you acctually try ot help your country or state or city, where ever you live and help them back on their feet. we can't succeed in life if there are some people who don't succeed. its like a team. if one fails every fails. if all triumph. all will triumph. those acctually mean things if you think about them for a while instead of agreeing because everyone else does.but whatever its your decission and im just 16 year old girl so what would I know right?

Both those options, in my opinion will not help the homeless person. If you gave him/her a tin of soup or money, what would he have tomorrow? Instead, why not teach him how to earn money - that is the most valuable gift anyone can give.
As for those that say the homeless person will spend the money on drugs - they are partially right. They do not know how to spend their money on wise things and the only "wise" thing for them is to spend it on drugs or beer - although saying that all poor people are druggies is a generalization and stereotype. Its like saying "All rich people are greedy".
But if a poor person was only given those two options: Money or food - I would probably say he/she would take food since they are starving and cold out there. They wouldn't think we were taking pity on them since their starvation and hunger has removed most of their ability to blame - they will take what they are given.
Many of us have the ability to help the poor but simply "spoon-feeding" them will not make things any better. In fact, it would make things worse. Simple things such as taking he/she to a shelter is very valuable and shows that one has consideration for Humanity. We cannot ignore the poor - because one day, we could be the one's ignored.
I hope the best for poor and sick people all over the world.

Some homeless people are not drunks or druggies. They are down on their luck and would appreciate any kind of help.
Others are homeless because they are drunks or druggies and they will want money. They will not appreciate the offer of food.
Some, even though they need the help, will be too proud to accept it and think it's an insult to them.
