I just found out that a therapist I went to about 10 years ago has told some info about my family to some people that visit her place of business. I am so angry right now. She told me that I could trust her and she would never repeat anything I said outside of her office. She has told some horrible things about my family. While these things are true, I never meant for anyone else to find out. What recourse do I have????

Ugh mine did this to me as well, but since the person she told thinks I'm Satan, it wouldn't hold in court or anywhere really.

But you should be able to find some justice over this, Good Luck!!!!!!

It depends on how long ago she told them. Breach of Confidentiality is a serious matter. An attorney can assist you. You can also lodge a complaint with your state's licensing agency. Find out about your former therapist's license to practice. File a complaint with the appropriate agency.

Please note that some of the answers you have been given are WRONG. You do NOT need to have signed a contract of any kind with the therapist.

Does your therapist have a medical degree? If so, she can be reported to the AMA. The Therapist may also belong to professional organizations (they should be listed in advertisements, etc), where you could file a complaint. If what you say is true, she is highly unethical at the least, and should have any license she holds revoked. Also contact your State's Department of Health for advice.

First if you didn't sign a client confidentially contract then by law she can legally do what she did. Check the papers you signed and then comfort her about it. If she denies and you still believe or the evidence against her is apparent then I suggest you take legal action and file a law suit for privacy issues.

Get a consultation with an attorney. Be prepared to prove what you are saying. Doctor/Patient records and information are privileged.
