generally speaking, how many hours would an old refrigerator's compressor run in a day? my old one run all day. the freezer reaches 0 and the compartment reaches 50 degrees of F. I tested the temperature control and found it works. Why the compressor did not stop? Please tell me some other possible reasons. Thank you.

You don't say how old, but it is likely that the unit runs so much because the compressor is still pumping but the valves are shot. Its a little electric engine bathed in ref. oil and @ some point it will either burn out or become inefficient; like yours has become.

You have a faulty compressor or you have leaked refrigerant. Sounds like you need to call a service company. Should not run all the time and should be much cooler than 50 degrees.

You say the control is working, but the compartment section gets its cooling from the freezer. If the freezer is 0 deg and the compartment is 50 deg., maybe your control is malfunctioning for the compartment.

Clean the coils on the refrigerator. That might fix it. They make special brushes if you want to buy them. Otherwise just use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.

The fridge should cool down to lower than 50. That won't keep food fresh. It would be good for cellaring wine though....

You probably have your freezer contol on max and what that does is close a little vent and rob the cold from the fresh food side. Just put the control on a low setting.
