Any processor from Intel is better than those from AMD. It is as simple as that.

AMD is slowly starting to catch up with Intel, but they haven't yet, which is one reason why computers with AMD chips are less expensive than those with Intel chips. Intel is better even than AMD x64 processors. In overall test comparisons, Intel is superior to AMD.

However, AMD has a better video card. It's GPU is far better than competitors. So, try to get a system with an Intel processor and an AMD video card.

Your video card is nearly as important as your processor, as it effects your video performance which is shown on your screen.

Good luck and enjoy your new computer. Have a great weekend!

P.S. If you do decide on a x64 processor from Intel, remember all your programs need to be x64 compatible, and there are not that many programs out yet which are compatibel. More are arriving every month, but not at a hugely fast rate. It is a future deal, but really, computers only have a three to four year lifetiime anyway, unless you wish to be way behind times, that is! So, wait until more programs are x64 too and then buy a computer with a x64 chip.

The Core 2 Duo is faster. In addition to the features others describe here, it has a faster bus. Intel did a dumb thing when they named these processors--they do sound the same, but the Core Duo came out first, then the Core 2 Duo was released. The "2" part of the name doesn't refer to the number of processors it contains--it just means it's the second version of the Core Duo processor. There are also Core non-duo processors, which have just a single processor core, but don't get one of those--two processors are always faster than one, by a long shot.

I'm not sure if Serenity is right when she says all your programs need to be "64-bit compatible", to run on a Core 2 Duo--most programs will work on both a 32-bit and a 64-bit processor. If they haven't been written to specifically take advantage of the extra speed of the 64-bit processor, then they'll just run at 32-bit speed. The only types of programs that most people use, that will see a difference on a 64-bit processor, are graphics-intensive programs like some games, video software, and possibly web browsers.

As someone else says here, for fast and detailed 3D, the graphics chip is more important than the main processor, at least with fast main processors like the Core series. Get a good high-end graphics chip--refer to the links other people cite here.

At a given GHz, Core 2 Duo is slightly faster than Athlon 64 X2 on average and uses less watts, but who runs the average application.

C2D is better because of performance.

C2D is 64 bit, but Core is 32 bit.

It is better to get the 64 bit processor if you want to be ready for the future.
