I have visited the rate my professor site and it was a negative popularity contest. It had a former professor of mine as very negative and I enjoyed his classes. He had a reputation of having high expectations for his students, but some thought he was unreasonable in the amount of work he expected.

Ask around at your school to identify which professors that are good and which ones to avoid. Find the professors that have been elected teacher of the year or have strong connections with others in their field. Most academic offices should have public files on any professor.

If you want to know how good a professor is, talk to them personally. A five minute talk with professor could give you the edge during class or if he/she was grading your test.

A database may be good for ranking a person, it does not show how good they are at their job.

On MySpace.com, if you belong or join, you can name the schools you attended or are attending. Below that is link to "grading the professor." Some of the grading is pretty cold. Maybe you can check this out.
