Some of the candidates haven't even been in the military. How is our commander in chief just supposed to be able to command our entire army when he hasn't even been in it?

okay, but Bush jr was only in the national guard and he was a deserter...so does that make him fit to be commander in chief??Or the fact that he was a huge alcoholic about 20 years ago. Or the fact that he did drugs. He isn't even fit to be a mail man, but look where he is..

Thirteen US presidents have never served one day in any branch of the military and many of the others did not spend much time in the military or were not major military leaders. U S Grant who was the military hero of the Civil War was seen by many as a totally ineffective president while presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were successful in their leadership roles. Even two war time presidents FDR and Wilson never saw military service. Just being in the military does not give you the leadership qualities necessary to run that nation which is more than running the military forces. One problem that only looking at military service for our commander in chief is that no major woman political leader in either party has military records thus would we want to say that women are no longer eligible to be president for the foreseeable future till we have one with a background in the military. We are no asking our presidents to be like the Kings of the Middle ages leading armies into war, a commander in chief is an executive position picking the right advisers on issues such as the military and defense policy.

Only a handful of presidents served in the military, as far as I know.

U.S. Grant, A. Jackson, Kennedy, T. Roosevelt and Eisenhower are the ones that I am aware of.

The powers conferred on the Commander-in-Chief are only to be used in the case of emergency. However, Bush continues to usurp such powers, absent the need for such emergency measures.
