there is an empty space where the picture/image should be and in the upper left hand corner, there is a very small box with a red X in it .. what is this and why can't I receive the images/pictures? Thx!

You might have a corrupted version of IE, or an older version that doesn't recognize photos, or you have a setting checked that blocks photos, or you might have to click the link at the bottom of your e-mail that says "show html graphics," or it could be something entirely different.
Ask the question again, but tell us what version of IE you have, what flavor Windows is running on your pc, and how you're connecting to the internet.

Most likely the email is NOT sent containing the image, but a link to it on another website, and your email program has it's security set to NOT allow emails to include liniks to other sites.
Check the SECURITY help for your program. (Which you don't mention the name of)
