I have a Compaq laptop that I want to wipe my hard drive for. I also have the hard drive from my old PC hooked up to an external hard drive case.

I want to wipe the old hard drive via the external hard drive hook up, transfer all my important files from my laptop to my external hard drive, then wipe my laptop's hard drive. Then I'll install Windows Vista, and transfer all my files back from my old hard drive to my laptop.

How do I actually wipe the hard drives, and what is the best method of doing all this?

Simply FORMAT the external drive, and use windows explorer to copy the file to it.

The foillow the install instruction coming with Vista and install that, with all hardware drivers,
reconnect external drive, copy files back (remnembering to reinstall applications too of course)
