The U.S. is more of a republic than a democracy.
A republic is where everyone elects leaders to make decisions for them.
A democracy is where everyone is involved in the decision making.
Obviously, in a country as big as the U.S., a true democracy would not be able to work simply because of its size.

The US is not a democracy. It is a democratic republic. That means we directly vote for representatives like Congressmen and Senators but they vote for us on individual issues. When we vote for president we are actually voting for whom will get our states Electoral Votes. The Electoral Votes are portioned out to the states according to the size of the population of that state.
The reason it is not a pure democracy is because it was designed to protect the rights of the minority form the tyranny of the majority.
Example of the tyranny of the majority: You and five friends go out to dinner. The check comes. One guy says that he votes that you pay for everyone else. The others vote that way, too. Now it is five to one that you have to pay the check.
In our system that does not happen. Before a vote on something like that can be taken all must first agree to abide by the results.

the united states is a democratic republic many answers here forget the first word - We the people vote and normally the electorate votes following the majority of peoples votes - they rarely dont because it might make the united states just the states that used to be united- but the main thing is the founding fathers set up the constitution to protect its citizens from the tyranny of govt -as soon as it is disregarded so are its citizens- jacob w put it best

Out of 113 countries ranked, the U.S. is ranked at number 16. To simply state that the U.S. is a republic and not a democracy is not an answer to the question: "How democratic is the U.S." If someone asks how fast does a turtle move, and gets an answer like: "turtles are slow, not fast," that is not answering the question.

Dude it is not just the u.s, how democratic is any country truely?? the government does what it wants! they have the power! i especially love how they creat wars that neither they nor their loved ones fight in!! and i really love how they give themselves payrise after payrise but expect everyone elso to survive on a pittance and tax us to the hilt!! i am not an american but am sure you would all love health cover...but do you have it?
that is one thing that comes to my mind. and another slavery was abolished....but the prisons largest population is african americans, so they are still in chains in many respects. so glad that african americans are making such a huge dent in the entertainment industry, oprah is a godsend and go obahma! best wishes.
