When formaldehyde is added to a tissue sample, it has a chemical reaction with amines that are present inside the cells. This chemical reaction results in fluorescence. This technique is used for cancer diagnoses because different amines are present in malignant cells, and as a result a malignant cell fluoresces in a different color from a benign cell.
