I am 29 weeks and so far every ultrasound has shown the baby is right on track. Well this last visit he measured 31 1/2 not 29. The doctor put me on a no sugar or sodium diets for 2 weeks to slow the babys growth. Has anyone every had this happen before?

I have had 4 ultrasounds during this pregnancy and everyone of them has shown the baby is right on track.. He has always measured what he should until now.. My doctor said I was not any farther along them though just that she was concerned for his weight increase. I still don't understand why she put me on that diet. I have only gained 14 pounds and I am 29 weeks. I am starting to get scared.

I have never heard of a doctor restricting sodium and sugar for a baby that was only measuring 2 weeks larger than dates.

Measurements via ultrasound are always given a 2 week window in either direction of the estimated due date, and to only have ONE ultrasound with measurements that are 2 weeks off is not unusual in the slightest. You need to ask your doctor some more questions. Are they really restricting your diet because baby is too big? Have you gained a lot of weight that they are concerned about? Did you have your gestational diabetes screen and was your blood sugar high? Something here is not adding up.

I'd be getting a second opinion, I think. At the very least, ask more questions.

I would get a second opinion! Sounds like your doctor really overreacted in this instance. It is common throughout pregnancy for a woman's uterus to vary a little in measurement in comparison to the weeks of gestation. Remember, ultrasound is not a perfect science anyway, and being 1 or 2 weeks off is not justification in my opinion to restrict your diet. Especially sodium, which is a very important nutrient a pregnant woman's body needs (maybe this explains why we crave pickles and potato chips!).

I imagine your doctor might suspect gestational diabetes, but since you haven't had the test yet, I would still say he/she acted prematurely.

So get another doctor....or don't go on the diet until you get the test results back.

my baby has measured a couple weeks bigger than he should be at every ultrasound I've had so far. (I'm 38 weeks) but my doctor doesn't seem concerned. (no changes to my diet or anything) she just grins and says I'm having a big baby. (my first son was 8 lbs. 2 oz. and i pushed him out in less than half an hour... so that may be why she's not concerned)
my blood pressure and blood sugar are normal... i've gained 34 pounds.

most baby's are either 2 weeks ahead or 2 weeks behind and thats usually normal but if you have sugar its a whole diffrent story because when that baby desides to start growing faster it usualy dosnt slow down and you have to watch what you eat 28 weeks i got sugar my baby started growing fast i went in labor 6 weeks early he still weighed almost 8 pounds the doc just looking out for you and the baby but if you dont have sugar there shouldnt be no concern for the 2 weeks because most babys are either two weeks off either way they give that lead way usualy they chek with a ultra sound . good luck don't worry to much just watch your sugar intake and don't starve your self cause you need to be healthy for you and your baby good luck hun :O)

Yes,

Baby's often go through a growth spurt, my little guy measured 2 weeks ahead also for a bit, then he slowed down and was measuring right for his gestational age. I would just listen to the Doc. Although I didnt have to do any special diet. But just incase listen to him and do what he says. Good luck, and I bet you will see things returning to normal in a week or two.
