When Krushchev came to power on the death of Stalin, he initiated a period called the 'thawing out' in which recognised the excesses of Stalin's reign and the brutality that occured towards those Russians and non-Russians in the Caucasus.

Krushchev realised that under stalin, communism had gone completely out of control, reign of terror - murdering, brutalising its own people. Stalin's policy of collectivisation in the Ukraine resulted in millions of deaths from starvation and played a major role in the Ukraine welcoming the German invasion.

Stalin's policy of spreading communism had resulted in distrust and confrontation with the west, forcing the blockade and stalemate in Berlin and intitiating the Cold War in Europe.

Krushschev really wanted to step back from this but unfortunately the hard line communists of lenin-stalin era still held the real power in the politburo, the military and the KGB.

Eventually and unfortunately, Kruschev was asked to step aside and relinquish his power as the hard line communists saw Kruschev's much more liberal approach damaging to communism. The world could have been a different place if Kruschev maintained power.

He went through a stage of called De-Stalinisation where he tried to wipe things to do with Stalin out of and away from Russia.

He wanted to encourage the idea of communism to be less prominent in the USSR.

In 1956, he made a speach to the 20th Party congress where he exposed Stalin for all he was..this was when De-Stalinisation started, then came the tearing down of buildings & statues connected to him.
Russians had lived in terror under Stalin, many killed or effected massivly and Khrushchev wanted them 2 forget it.
