Most movies made from the books are *appalling* if you've read the books first. Included in this is most bible-based movies, LOTR, 2001, etc. etc. etc. Although these are pretty good movies, the books were *great*, and the movies just don't measure up.
Odd as it sounds, I believe that I would have to go with Dr. Doolittle (the original musical). True, it compresses two or three of the (excellent) books into one movie, but it is probably the only movie that actually *adds* something to the story even though it is also taking away from the story. It is, at least, one of the few truly *excellent* movies based on an excellent book.
Honorable mentions:
The Sword in the Stone - Disney didn't have to cut out *that* much, but the things left in were pretty true to the excellent book, and this *is* an excellent movie.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - although *not* as good as the book, the animation/artwork was superb
Frankenstein - a truly crappy story made into a rather interesting movie
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - nowhere near as good as the book, but an excellent movie nonetheless

To Kill a Mockingbird - It's my favorite book, and the director, actors, etc. did a good job with the movie.
Tuck Everlasting is another one of my favorite books. The movie was okay, but I like to think of the book and movie as two different things - they're too different for one to be based on the other.
And I'm sure there's many more, but that's what I've thought of at the moment. =)

Without a doubt, and without hesitation! The Lord of the Rings trilogy was the best movie made from a well-known book that I had ever experienced. In all probability the director, the producer/s and the crew and cast all truly knew th subject exceptionally well, and could identify truly with the story, settings and characterizations of this epic story. Almost all the characters complied well with my own imaginings of their character traits, looks, etc. - even the Hobbits and Golum: two extremely difficult characterizations!! The story was never over-dramatized, and the film actually allowed the viewers to form their own imaging in many ways. The entire epic trilogy was done cinematographically exceptionally well, and with sensitivity, and one never got the idea the director wanted to "re-write the tale to suit his beliefs". Brilliant!

The Lord of the Rings trilogy definitely. The fact that if you read the book, you'd know how difficult it would be to simply make the script out of Tolkien's words! And the cinematography was awesome! Though the actors were not the images I have envisioned while reading the book, the sight of Viggo was WOW! And how they captured Lothlorien? Almost exactly as I imagined it to be -- breathtaking!

Hmmm...Twilight was recently optioned for a movie, but I am boycotting it because I will not be able to read the books without seeing the actors if I see the movie.
I would have to say Lord of The Rings-shot in breathtaking locations-New Zealand, and the cgi is flawless. They captured Tolkien's novels beautifully.

I have 2, actually, The Black Stallion by Walter Farley, and Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand. Oh, I could also add The Last Unicorn, Bridge to Terabithia, and the Harry Potter movies.

It is interesting to me that the first book that came to mind was One Flew over the Cookoo's nest because Jack Nicholson was so good in it. I think the tv miniseries Roots was outstanding. As an old English teacher, I also have to say the late Pride and Prejudice was fun to watch.

Mine was the Green Mile. Great book and the movie actually stayed very close to the real story.
