not true... the closest mars will get is ~30 million miles away, the moon is a quarter of a million (250,000) miles, thats still 29.75 million miles that mars has to cover to be as large as the moon

The Moon and Mars will be close together in the sky. I'm not sure of time or date, but it sounds like you've got it right. (When they are close together it's called a "conjunction", if I remember right)
and I hear that there's a rumor that Mars will appear as big as the Moon. This is a mistake. Mars never gets that close to us.
It ought to appear like a bright, red star. It's still a neat sight, even if it's not as spectacular as this rumor would imply.

Utter nonsense. Mars is currently visible in the evening sky, but at the very best it looks like a bright reddish star. No where NEAR the size of the moon.

I heard that too. It is a urban legend that has been circulating since July. Apparently someone sent an email saying Mars would be in the sky and told that person to tell his friends and so on.
