Johnson 115 1999 outboard auto oil/gas mix ran out of gas. Refilled with gas and engine smokes profusely (but turns over). Is this just because the mixture oil/gas mix is wrong (too much oil) and will return to normal or has something more serious occured. Thanks for any advice.

If you just ran out of gas and refilled with oil and gas it is most likely a little excess oil mixture. Take it for a long ride and it should clear up.

If it is oil injected, when you ran out of gas your carbs loaded with oil. your engine can only burn what it is fed through the carbs. Drain your carbs by removing the drain screw on the bowl of each carb. Put the screws back in, squeeze the primer bulb on the fuel line until it gets hard, then run the motor. It will smoke excessively for a few minutes while the excess oil in the motor will burn too. Then it should be fine.

It should return to normal after a bit of use
You have a seperat oil tank which continued to pump oil as the gas was running out.
If anything you may need to change or clean your spark plugs
