I've found them both remarkable and affectionate. I don't see a difference in either except for their personalities. I have both, and I'm manager of a no-kill shelter.

If you're looking for something affectionate, I'd say dogs. Most are loyal and affectionate from the begining.

If you cat find a cat that is very used to people and likes being pet, then it could be just as affectionate. The only difference is that cats are loving only when they want to be.

I think cats are the most remarkable. They are highly intelligent, beautiful, and gracefull animals.

Dogs are way more affectionate than cats, I have found that cats tend to only be affectionate when they want something whereas dogs will just come and find you if they want a cuddle or a belly rub or their ears scrubbed. Cats tend to be very self sufficient and if they are affectionate and then get bored with you can turn and scratch and struggle, lacerating your arms. I think cats are quite remarkable though as they are very self sufficient. My favourite will always be dogs though, as stinky, crotchety, grumbly and cantankerous as they get in their old age (ours is now 12 which is 84 roughly in dog years) they are still loving and just now when I came downstairs having gone for a post dinner sleep she was lashing her tail till it was a quiver and pawing at me until I stroked and cuddled her in return she wanted nothing but that.

dog is more affectionate but cats are able to be left to their own devices and not require lots of attention

I admire affection in pets, but I like independence equally! So, I prefer cats. But, if it's absolute loyalty and unconditional love you're craving, I'd say, get a dog.
