I was told my car has a small leak in the air conditioner compressor. It's going to cost $800.00 to replace it. I don't have that kind of money to put into the air, but I have 3 small children and we live in southern TN so it is very hot. Is there a way to seal the leak or are we just out of luck?

Usually, a compressor will leak at the shaft seal right behind the clutch and pulley on the front of the compressor---where the belt goes on it. This shaft seal can be replaced for a lot less money than a whole compressor if the shop has the right tools to do it. Or see if they can get a used compressor---might be a cheaper way to go as long as they warranty the used part. Maybe get some quotes from other shops as well and make sure they will change the oil in the system and ask if the accumulator---which is the filter for the system---should be changed. Find out exactly what each shop will do to compare prices equally and parts costs/labor costs.

The compressor does not cost $800 but all the labor and feon to install cost $800 . The front seal gets worn and then they leak. All I can offer is the AC kit. usually $40 at the parts store. Put the stuff in -- check the book and only put in the amount of freon stated. The system should be empty beforing putting the stuff in.with AC on and motor running.. I'm sure you have a friend or two and you can figure this out -- it is simple to do. Mighjt be a book at the auto store to read...

i live in Tennessee also and i know how hot it is right now, unfortunately there is no way to seal it,800 is too high to repair that one any way,id look around someone will do it for a lot less i wish there was something i could tell you to help, but noting on the market to help seal a leak up in an air conditioning system, were hoping for a good cool down ,maybe it will get here sooner, good luck with it.

they make a high mileage freon with some stuff in it, and if your garage was honest they would put it in and say oh well if it last it will last,,

car is 11 years old, I would not spend 800 plus freon to repair the AC<

Ask the garage if there is a salvage yard around that has a used one. The cost should be signifcantly less going that route. http://www.car-part.com
