Who experienced any harm of cerclage - as I read, that there is a risk of that surgery, but my Dr.advised that it's necessary to close cervix to protect baby from infection (in the shower, etc), as my cervix is short and a baby is rather heavy for 24 weeks and there is a threat to deliver before time along the risk of infection. But I heared, that it's also a lot of risk to have cerclage surgury done! And I am afraid of both: doing that surgery and loosing my baby. Of course, I will do what the Dr advises, but I wish to know, if someone exprienced that case and have some more information for me about this?

Well, the good news is that you are already 24 weeks, which is past the age of viability, so even if your baby was delivered early, with every day that passes the chances of survival are dramatically increased, especially if your hospital has a good NICU unit.

But yes, if you have a cerclage, there are definite risks. Risks that it won't work and you'll dilate anyway, risk that if you do start to dilate the stitch will rip the cervix, risk for infection.

You really need to weigh your options, and I think it is smart that you do what your doctor recommends, because they know your condition and your body better than any of us do.

It's a tough decision, I know, because there are risks with both. You can breathe a tad easier since your baby is viable, although it would be in intensive care for a while if born now. Still, you've reached a milestone. With every surgery, including cerclage, there are risks like infection or dilating despite the procedure. You must pray hard and then just go with what your mother's instinct tells you. That's all I can say. Until you do decide, make sure you rest a lot and don't engage in too much activity. God will look after you and your little one.

Signs Of Miscarriage At 24 Weeks

hi. i lost my first son at 21 weeks bc i had dilated without knowing it and got an infection. with my second son i had a preventative cerclage at 13 weeks and the stitch held my cervix shut (but i was also on bed rest from 13 weeks til i gave birth). i think a rescue cerclage would be your best bet to keep your baby safe. like your doc said, there's a risk in having it done (esp since your baby is so big already) but i think the greater risk is you leaving it alone. you're already 1 cm dilated. when i went to the hospital with my first pregnancy the doc said i was 3 cm dilated. any dilation can cause infection. in any case, whether you go through with the cerclage or not you should take it easy and lie down as much as you can to keep the baby's weight off your cervix. here's the link to a support group that helped me throughout my 2nd pregnancy. it's for women with an incompetent cervix:

just pray but you don't have to worry about a miscarriage because after 20 weeks you no longer have misscarriages you have stillbirths but just pray that god does his will
