The industry wide standard is IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n. This is a mutually agreed upon method of providing wireless connectivity. N is at this time still in draft state and until final will not be an actual standard. The industry wide standard enables interoperability among makers. Industry standards are commonplace (e.g. light bulb socket size, garden hose coupling size, etc.

If a hardware maker states his device is compliant to a standard it means it meets the standard. The Intel PRO/Wireless probably states somewhere in its literature it meets the 802.11 a/b/g standard but not the n standard because the n standard is still a draft.
