As we neared the end of the flight we flew over what I believe was one of the great lakes. Does anyone happen to know what lake that might have been? I'm thinking Lake Erie? Also saw a snaking type river that seemed to flow from the lake could that have been the Erie canel? It would be wonderful if the Airlines would announce as they are flying over landmarks of interest. I know they are busy flying the plane but a little commentary would be nice. The east coast is just beautiful from the air.

Erie is a very likely candidate given that it is in the right path between California and New York.
My suggestion is that you load up Google Earth and try to mach what you saw with the image take by satellite that it presents.
Although it would be nice if they could announce stuff on the way, being "tour guides" is not the crew first priority. New York is a very busy place with lots of traffic and getting in that crowded space means talking a lot with the air traffic control.
Also, announcing what is on the left side (and perhaps not visible for the passenger seated on the right side or those not having window seat) is a bit pointless.
Nest time you fly, bring along an atlas with good accurate maps. That is what I always did (or course, it is a bit pointless when over the ocean, bit when flying overland, it might be a good distraction if the in-flight entertainment system does not have anything that interest you)

Michigan and Erie are both likely depending on routing and where in California you flew from.

Usually one of the pilots does make announcements....they must have been very busy that day.
