This is sort of a myth.

Nobody is "more fertile" following a miscarriage or a pregnancy. What happens is, many women find themselves pregnant again because you always ovulate BEFORE you get your first period after the miscarriage or delivery of the baby. Too many women assume that if they have not resumed menstruation, they cannot get pregnant yet. There are a lot of post-partum babies that are conceived because of this reason.

But you do not ovulate more eggs, the hormones in your body do not make conception more likely (although they might cause conditions in the uterus to be more favorable to implantation). So no, you are not "more fertile".

It's not true that you are more fertile after a miscarriage - I think it's just that man women get pregnant again right after a miscarriage because they haven't realized they weren't ovulating (most women are not that in tune with their fertility cycles). Having a miscarriage is a bit like delivering your baby in that you can get pregnant right away (unless in the case of a baby if you are doing ecological breastfeeding).

As always, whether you have just had a baby or just miscarried, you are "most fertile" around the time of ovulation. If you learn to watch your fertility signs you can detect this easily each cycle, even if your periods have not returned yet.

There is a good book by the Kippleys about tracking your cycles - The Art of Nat'l Family Planning
