Yes it really did happen. But the Great Lon Chaney was only a actor.

It's a fictional novel written by Victor Hugo and has no basis in fact. Originally published in 1831 under the name Notre-Dame de Paris it is a commentary on social justice and religious fanaticism. But the writer could have heared a tail about a bell ringer that was like a monster. So I think he heard a story a bit like his and wrote the book and he might have taken people from his time and made them to fit his book. Like the monk or priest or what ever that guy was could have and most likey was taken from real life and put into the storie. Hope I was of help. Latter=)

It is neither. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a novel, a work of fiction. While there may have been some characters that were similar to real people, there was no historical fact or legend involved.

It's true, really. He got the job A, because he was ugly; B, because he was really ugly; C, because when the clapper on the bell broke, the priest was panicked but the hunchback declared "I will hit it with my forehead and it will make beautiful music." And so he did for many years, until one day he fell from the bell-tower and SPLAT, wound up in front of Notre Dame Cathedral's courtyard. Because he had spent most of his life in the belfry, nobody knew who he was until an old priest who suffered from Alzheimer's came along and said "I don't remember his name, but his face rings a bell."

It's half and half there was a hunchback in Notre dame who rang the bell but he and a carnival woman were executed for falling in love.
