more than likely a carburator problem, get yourself a new edelbrock 600 or 650 cfm. carb for it or have your quadrajet rebuilt.

As the Rochester Quadrajet carburetor ages the needle and seat fuel float becomes heavy as it get saturated with fuel. Its made of a plastic resin. This causes an unusually high fuel level in the float bowl.
*Get a replacement kit and a new float from your local Chevy dealer. Auto parts stores have kits but occasionally the float is not the correct shape and the needle hanger isn't spaced properly so the needle doesn't drop freely into the seat.
Check and replace the fuel inlet filter to a genuine paper type AC-Delco unit. If it has the old brass looking thing throw it as far as you can. Replace the needle and seat
Make sure your getting a minimum of 5 psi. of fuel pressure to the carburetor. 6-7 psi is ideal.
Make sure you put the red insulator pad back with the spring loaded carbon bushing facing down between the coil and cap. Its best to wipe this silicone pad with high temp ignition grease. Carefully screw down the coil in top of the HEI distributor. If this does not cure the problem the actual ignition coil may be suspect. In that case replace with a genuine MSD coil that replaces the one on top of your cap. Always be sure to replace caps and rotors with MSD products. The insurts are brass and the plastic the cap and rotors are made of high dialectric strength material. This prevents cross fireing inside the cap. All black ignition caps and rotors have traces if carbon in them and can create misfire. Some cheapies have aluminum insurts which don't conduct electricity as well as brass inserts ( where the wires enter the cap.)
Moroso, AC-Delco and MSD ignition wires are the best you can lay your hands on.

it is an particularly common activity to do: Steps: a million) intently label each and each spark plug cord with tape. 2) notice the area and rotation and entice a chew of paper the cap with each and each cord variety and fireplace rotation. 3) do away with the spark plug wires intently twisting them, so which you do no longer brake the connector tips. 4) The cap rotor would be on appropriate of the distributor shaft. now and returned you should play a splash and twist confusing few circumstances as a fashion to do away with it. This section is in basic terms inserted and in basic terms extra healthy on one place. notice the area notch on the recent rotor arm and shaft notch instruction manual and insert the recent one the comparable way. 5) deploy the recent distributor cap and wires using the comparable configuration stated while bumped off. reliable luck...!

Could be spark tracking at spark plugs.Recomend dielectric grease on spark plug insulators to stop tracking and correct performance.Plug gap may be to wide(incorrect)causeing to much resistance.Check manufacture specs.
