the earth went into total darkness? Would we freeze in a matter of seconds? or would we live in fear and lonely panic for a day or so?

It would take more than a day for Earth to freeze. It might take weeks or months, getting gradually colder all the time until the air turned to liquid nitrogen and oxygen and then froze solid, leaving the Earth covered with nitrogen and oxygen ice and a vacuum here the air used to be.

Do you mean if the Sun were not there? Or only if somehow the whole world was not getting Sunlight? If the sun were not there we would die pretty fast. Once the Earth gave up the last of its warmth our Air and Water would freeze. It might take a few weeks give or take. If our poles shifted and sent our earth on an improper orbit then it would be a slower death for those who lived through the floods.

The earths air retains most of heat of sun.If you get a good quality room heater,generator,and a lot of diesel you can survive for more than a week.Anyway the earth has no chace of going into total darkness unless some highly advanced civilization abducts earth from solar system.

Technology has evolved so much, the government could keep electricity going to keep us warm for awhile.
