In the late 17th and early 18th centuries there were pirates very much like the ones you see in movies. There are modern pirates - a pirate is anyone who attacks a boat at sea and steals things. But modern pirates are not like the pirates you see in movies.

Pirates have been around since man was able to build a boat and make his way safely to a place that was not his home. Vikings were considered pirates, they raided villages rather than ships. Chinese had pirates as did the Greeks, the Romans, the Japanese and any other culture that lived near a body of water.
Pirates weren't just around in the 17th to the 18th century, they've been around a very, very long time and do still exist to this day. Piracy is more than a definition, it is a chosen way of life and a very hard one to live at that.

Yes, and there is such a thing as modern day pirates. I saw a program not long ago where a family was on the open water in their yacht and they were taken over by machine gun carrying pirates!!! I did not know this still took place.

piracy is a definition
Piracy is a robbery committed at sea, or sometimes on the shore, by an agent without a commission from a sovereign nation. Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of US $13 to $16 billion per year[2]), particularly in the waters between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, off the Somali coast, and in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, which are used by over 50,000 commercial ships a year. A recent[1] surge in piracy off the Somali coast spurred a multi-national effort led by the United States to patrol the waters near the Horn of Africa to combat piracy. While boats off the coasts of North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea are still assailed by pirates, the Royal Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard have nearly eradicated piracy in U.S. waters and in the Caribbean Sea.
The Jolly Roger is a traditional flag of European and American pirates and a symbol for piracy that has been adopted by film-makers and toy manufacturers.

Yes there were and still are.they are known in a few places around the world right know.In the Caribbean and off the Atlantic coast of South America, and along the Eastern Africa/Asia coasts. The caribbean pirates mostly attack small vessels for a quick hit and run job, where as in the African Asia part of the world they attack major shipping vessels. Estimates say that at least one ship a day is pirated in some way there.

Believe or not there are still pirates. Although is not what you think. They are a huge problem still in different parts of the world, Like The Pacific and Indian Oceans, off the Somali coast and in the strait of Malacca and Singapore. And in North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea there has been also reports of piracy still. Is estimated that they cause worldwide losses of $13 to $16 billion per year

Pirates are very much real, even though they don't wear the ridiculous outfits we think of when the subject comes up. In olden days, pirates would take over ships and attempt to steal anything of value. The particularly nasty ones wold purposely cause bloodshed, as well. Even nowadays, pirates exist, though they aren't as up-front as they used to be. Ever hear of bootlegging? That's the politically correct term for modern day pirating

Yes. You don't here about them much anymore because if they are still out there, they aren't very common and no one really runs into them. A pirate is a thief and murderer who steals ships and anything on them. They used to be a problem a long time ago, but practically don't exist anymore. I'm not going to be so closed-minded as to tell you that there are no pirates anymore, because honestly, I don't know.

^Yes pirates did and do still exist today, their weapons have changed and their boats may have motors, but they are still the cutthroats they always were. There have been reports in Florida, the Caribbean and the coast off Africa to name a few. The site below will tell you of other places they have been known to attack.
