Zippo makes two forms of lighters... the standard (lighter fluid), and the relatively new ZU (butane).

Butane is a GAS, it is only liquid while it is under the pressure of it's supple canister or a BIC lighter for example.

IF you were to saw off the top of a Butane lighter, the butane would rapidly depressurize and become a gas again. AND, very possibly it might ignite if there were a spark, resulting in a small explosion.

I would't recommend cutting into a butane supply. Nor would I recommend lighting a butane-soaked standard Zippo wick. You can get a Z-plus! insert that converts a zippo lighter into a butane lighter. I have one. It works great. Here's a link .http://www.elighters.com/zplus.html
