In each of their respective terms, each President had involved us in a difficult war where victory seemed impossible. Both were very unpopular towards the ends of their presidencies.

Yet, many years later, Truman is looked upon as a good President, with many politicians invoking his image. Johnson on the other hand is deemed by history to be a failure.

Yes, I know Johnson inherited Vietnam. But when he inherited it, it was just a few thousand American advisors there. Johnson was the one that escalated it to a full scale war involving 200,000+ troops there at times.

Definietly a Johnson. Truman's big thing that made him unpopular was the A-bomb.

George Bush will be remembered as a distillage of the Three Stooges. He stooges for the oil and coal mafias, he stooges for for the trans-national corporations and he stooges for the Jesus freak right. The historical realities of the Truman and Johnson eras left them with no reasonable politcal way to avoid war. When we 'lost' China in 1949 to the 'communists' no president could 'do nothing' to stop 'the advance' of communism. To do nothing meant that they and their party would be doomed. Bush is a different story. Moving strongly against Terror Inc. could have been successfully accomplished by covert operations targeting real people, cells and the money distributing enablers that comprise this threat. A classic and conventional invasion of Iraq and its subsequent clumsy attempt at occupation didn't have to happen. The Bush Junta created this monster and Bush himself is the willing stooge that fronts for this mess...he for certain ain't the leader. Truman and Johnson led the parade and they admitted it. Truman said, "The buck stops here'! Johnson had the grace to bow out...the political equivalent of falling on his sword. Bush can only blather on about how 'we will win' or some variation of this BS. Bush isn't a Truman OR a Johnson..he's just an incompetent bum cheered on by some of the worst SOBs in the history of America!

I think more like Truman. The similarities are closer. Truman had an approval rating lower than Bush does now. Truman was disliked worldwide for his use of the the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The only possbile difference is Truman inherited a war, while Bush didn't.

Harry Truman. At least Harry Truman was a leader.
Lyndon Johnson was only on the ballot for one reason. he was a southerner. There was no way JFK could have carried the south without him.
(((Sounds like something Karl Rove would have thought of, perhaps!))

Truman or Johnson? Are those my only choices?

I would say, that Bush will be remembered more like Ulysses S. Grant. His was the most corrupt administration in history, yet Grant himself had never been charged with a crime. Grant was an idiot just like Bush and crooked men came in and took over the oval office.

Bush will never be look at as a good president.

Better check your facts, Johnson inherited Vietnam from Kennedy, who inherited it from Ike and it ruined LBJ's great legacy on Civil Rights, the Great Society, etc.
Before Truman got into the Korean war, he had ended the biggest conflict in history, and bought Victory to the Allies.

To mention Bush in the same sentence as these Presidents is to ignore all reality, not to mention the slander to their good names !

Hopefully, Bush will be so utterly outshone by a long succession of brillant, bold, visionary, inspirational, prosperous and peaceful Presidencies that history will cast him nary a glance.

May we put forward for the best Americans among us for the job, never mind the cynical punditing and polls. May America clear her eyes and mind from the cloud of misinformation and the drug haze of fear and vote with conscience and clarity.

Don't know.

I have to wait until Bush is out of office and dead for a few years before a real historical study of his presidency can be begin.

With any luck, history will not bother to even remember Bush.

He should be forgotten the minute he leaves office. Just as you forget the toothache once the tooth is pulled.

The sooner the better.
