We just bought a house and we found out certain lights do not want to work. The kitchen lights don't work, it is a florescent light and there is a light over the sink. Then the light in the living room does work. What do I need to do it get these working, oh and also the vent hood doesnt work. See these things were all working during the final walk thru of the house. Then after the power company turned off the power and then turned everything on these things stopped working.

Ow!

You might want an electrician to have a look. It sounds like there's a problem with that particular circuit.

Good luck!

yeh paint is correct, check simple things first. first thing I would check is bulbs, then breaker, then go out and buy an live feed tester, this is $10.00 at lowes/hd and will allow you to see if there is current running at your lights. But these things sound like it could be on same circuit there fore more likely a breaker, open your box and see if anything is tripped if it dont' look like nothign its tripped, one by one shutoff each and every breaker then go back and turn them on and see if thats your problem. It could be you have a bad breaker itself. If its none of these things then a splice connection is loose somewhere, this more likely requires attic access and opening of junction boxes.
Did you have your main shut off BEFORE they reconnected the power? It is usually a requirement to do this, and if not im surprised they didn't. It could have been caused by surged voltage going through the box and blowing a breaker.

Let us know if this works

Paint1118 has it pretty good. If you have breakers you have to turn them all the way off to reset them before you turn then back on. (if you try to turn them on from the tripped position they feel mushy and will not turn on. If you have fuses you need to check if one of then is blown. Blown fuses and tripped breakers in lighting circuits are usually 15 Amps (do not replace any of these with a larger size.
Good Luck ! ! !

always start with the simplest solution.check bulbs first.then test for currant,a cheap electrical tester will cost a few dollars. also check the breaker box for blown breakers.the breakers will not always trip to the complete off side so physically toggle them on and off
