is it like a cable modem for a desktop...does it connect to the internet???

my laptop already has a wireless card in it. I can connect to other peoples wireless networks but I want my own. I dont like stealing other peoples connection.
about to buy linksys wireless router.

Your modem plugs in to it. You would place your router next to your modem. Some modems already have wireless built in. You also need a wireless card for your laptop. Most newer laptops have that built in already. You then just set up the connection between your wireless card in your laptop and the wireless router or modem. Hope this helps.
