the area is from the tip of the finger to the first joint, the e.r. said it was a second degree burn

Try scrubbing it with a pumice stone.

No you don't need surgery, since it has hardened that normally means that skin is dead and it should slough (peal) off in a few days. Meanwhile keep it clean. If it doesn't slough off or becomes red around the edges, you might want a doctor to look at it. DON'T pick at it trying to make it come off faster, you increase the chance of infecting it. Burns like most injuries should heal from the inside out. The dead skin protects the area until the new skin underneath it is ready to be exposed.

The dead skin will come off when it's good and ready to.

You might try applying aloe gel to help speed the healing though. Good luck!
