As free antivirus i recommend BitDefender http://www.bitdefender.com/no/view/Download-Free-Products.html
and Comodo Firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
As antispyware/adware/malware you have Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php SuperAntiSpyware http://superantispyware.com/ and Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

*Note: Have only one antivirus program and one firewall installed on you computer. Adware/spyware removers are ok to have more of.

There is No single one stand alone Internet Security Suite, that includes Virus Software that is the best,
You must understand that it really takes a combination of several programs to attain real security on your machines.
Virus Software,
Lavasofts Adaware
Spybot's Search and destroy.
Many contain different degree's of protection, and all are good to a certian degree.
One thing to remember, for sure use only one Virus Software, they do not play well if you use more than one from different companies.

AV Comparatives performs informative studies on the effectiveness of Windows anti-virus programs:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

For an effective free solution, I would recommend Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic:

http://www.free-av.com/

In the February 2007 on-demand test by AV Comparatives, Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium had a total detection rate of 98.85% -- better than Symantec (98.5%), AVG (96.37%), or McAfee (91.63%).

One disadvantage of AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is that an AntiVir ad appears each time the program updates.

A good free one. And it works is avast. Have been using for 3 years. This will up date sometimes twice a day if need be. Norton and the others slows down the computer way too much. Go to their web site a look for the free version, for personal use only.

kaspersky, google it and read the reviews for XP. AVOID Norton it sucks so bad I replaced it even though I had 18 months of updates left, it slowed my PC to a crawl and I have the new dual processors!

I like AVG it was recommended by my computer guy he told me the major problem with the top names like Norton is that virus can be made to literally turn OFF your software and they target the bigger software makers.

Depends.

If you are willing to pay for one then either NOD32 from http://eset.com or Kaspersky from http://kaspersky.com

If you want a free one I recommend Active Virus Shield which is made by AOL but powered by Kaspersky - http://activevirusshield.com

And from personal experience I'd say avoid Norton (Symantec) at al costs.

Norton and MacAfee are two of the bigger name brands that you can buy and both are good programs. There are others of course and each person will have their own opinion of course but I have used both of the ones I mentioned and they are both fine programs.
