It sounds like your starter is not doing its job. Have you replaced the battery recently? Try this. Turn on your headlights and try to start the car. If the headlights dim a lot, then you need a new battery and/or battery connections.

A mechanic once told me the starter was pulling too many amps, but yours may or may not be doing the same. Hopefully it's just the battery, as the starter is harder to replace.
