you need a external hard drive big enough to hold what you have on your computer. plug it into your computer and copy everything you have onto the external hard drive, that is how you back it up.

It means you should copy onto some recordable media (DVD/CD/another computer or hard drive)anything you do not want to lose. For example:- any letters or personal documents, photographs. You should know where these are stored on your computer and copy them. Windows has(had?) in the " Start, accessories, system tools" dropdown an option to backup. You can tick the directories you want to copy.

Go to your programs and under accessories go to system tools and there is a backup routine. You can backup to an external drive or cd/dvds.

AFTER you have backed up the drive and know it is backed up then you should delete any sensitive files from the drive as they are fully available to the techs.

I always back up my hard drive with Acronis True Image. It's very reliable and easy to use software that allows me to keep my data safe.
"to back up" means to copy your files and documents or a hard drive to keep it safe if the system crashed.
