rly new... Lights were on until rear brakes were done and all lights went out (Thankfully).. Then they came on again after a few weeks...Brake fluid level is good. The 4x4 high light also flahes now and then without 4x4 being selected. Is there a sensor which may be dirty/dusty and causing this?

you must have the system scanned with a computer interface.
a 2004 ford is probably going to have to have allot of scans at that age.drive it off a cliff now! it'll save you allot of bux.

Most likely cause is the speed sensor on top of the rear differential. In order to be sure that part will turn out the light is have the ABS codes checked at ford dealer. or just slide under any late model Ford with three channel ABS and borrow there sensor for a drive around the block. Sensor is held in with a 10 mm bolt and sealed to the diff with a O ring. The Four by four light might think the diff signal is tire slippage however I think the two problems are un related.

I'd just pull the ABS fuse. That system was pretty useless on Explorers any how. The 4WD light is probably caused by a bad transfer case sensor switch. It's easy to take off and replace with a security type torx bit.

Yes there is a rear ABS sensor mounted on the top of the rear differential that goes bad fairly regularly on Explorers. You will need to have the system scanned and find out the exact code to fix it however.

Might be helpful along with the previous answers. Could be just a dirty sensor or bad /corroded wire.
