It could be one of many things, some of the answers in here could be the right one, so I will donate another possibility. Flashing engine light means over-heating, I think. So if the engine's too hot, the fuel-air mix gets muddled and doesn't ignite properly, maybe even missing a stroke or two on every cycle, which would explain the car running poorly. The smell could be partially unburnt fuel, resulting in black smoke, and a sulphur smell. Have a look at the exhaust when the engine is running, is there black smoke instead of white coming out? If it is an over-heated engine, check the engine coolant level under the bonnet, the fluid level should be well within two markings on the fluid tank. If you're not sure which tank is the engine fluid, ask a neighbour, friend etc, who does. If the fluid is low, get a top-up, under advice from someone who knows how to do it. Hope this helps.

Yeppers...you do have a few good answers here...
It certainly appears time to change that cat-converter as all the symtoms are present...
When the cat-con becomes plugged the vehicle will lose it vacuum intake because the plugged cat-con won't allow enough air out... It will lose a lot of power and the engine will run rough...it may even stall completely...
The foul odour comes from low grade fuel and even more foul if the fuel contains over ten percent corn fuel...YUCK...!
Some cat-cons can be very expensive and you may want to shop around as even used ones from wrecks will do you just fine if the wreck is not too old...
Be sure to install a new gas line filter also...
Good luck...
