Government for the people could work if:
Lobbying groups were banned .
Ethnic groups were not given special treatment.
Pork couldn't be added to bills.
If the best interests of the citizens were put first.
Corporations had no input in legislation.
There were no "hidden agenda",put transparency in every law and bill passed.

Those are things the Republicans, but not the Democrats, care about.
I do not see much of a way to reunite the two groups. Republicans want freedom from government while the Democrats want dependency upon government.

Since we don't agree on what the Constitution means, (for instance, the USSC has turned the Establishment Clause into something it was never intended to be), how can we agree on protecting it? What does "focused on...our troops..." even mean? Some are focused on bringing them home at any cost, some are focused on supporting their war efforts...How can we focus together on protecting our borders when many people seem to welcome illegals and cry "racism" when illegals are returned whence they came...your question is really naive.

Sure, but politicians get elected by exploiting the emotions of the "sheeople"
both sides, libs and cons, dem and rep, all the same, neither party fixes anything when they're in power. The Dems are in control of congress, what have they done? nothing. when the Reps were in control, what did they do? nothing.
until you realize that they're both playing the public for their own selfish ends.........
what am I thinking, the sheep will always blindly follow.

it is the extreme far ends of both parties that seem to get the most press as they also seem to be the most vocal. more seem to be declaring themselves to ally with them as issues become more critical to preserve our nation.
when posters write that their rights have been trampled they talk in general and cannot give specific information on how this has affected them personally. have they changed the way the live their lives or conduct their personal business.
war was declared on us not by a country, but by people who's ideology would take us back to the 7th century and how, if allowed, would REALLY take away individual freedoms. the use 21st century methods of communication and this requires technology that can monitor them.
it is the duty of our government to protect us and yet we would tie their hands and rob them of their most effective tool, technology. it is not a matter of IF they attacks again but When.
after 9/11, america was united for a brief period but it didn't take long before it to end. bin ladin in one of this tapes, goves encourgement to his followers and advised paticence as american were too weak for war.

Yes, but the Republican party operatives and politicians don't want unity. They created their big tent based on wedge issues and single issue voters. Their purpose is to win elections, not to govern well, and they're not going to give up their winning formula for the sake of the country as a whole.

With the diversity of opinions, on Yahoo Answers, and the lack of forethought shown by many, I believe it would be impossible to get them all on the same page, or united as the case may be.

That sounds nice, but while the media directs our attention to those big issues, little things are slipped under our noses. Politicians are the problem. We all need to figure out how to get them out of our government.

if you look at the actions of the republican party of the last 15 years... from newt gingrich... to karl rove...
they are the ones that have hammered away on single wedge issues in order to gain partisan support.
they are the ones who led the charge to erode the middle ground. and under bush with fox news' help, they succeeded in moving the dialogue so far to the extreme right that being a moderate of either stripe makes you seem the lunatic fringe.
mainstream political dialogue in the US is incredibly narrow and simplistic. somehow, becoming fractious over small differences on the issues has been mistaken for political courage. it's pathetic grandstanding.
we haven't had much choice in recent memory. it's been like choosing between Charmin or Kleenex toilet paper. is the difference really worth the marketing hype?
WE NEED LEADERS IN BOTH PARTIES who know how to lead us in fostering real dialogue again, and decisionmaking with integrity. Americans agree on more than they disagree on. And we can still be reasoned with and be tolerant of our fellow citizens, can't we? It starts with each of us, individually... THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE.

Not in a million years my furry hatted little questioner .
What divides people is the fundamentals of morality .
While one group of Americans makes a decision to pursue knowledge where ever it leads another group makes accusations that that group is completely incorrect despite the logic and facts to support its position .
You can see readily that Ideas from both camps mix uneasily to form a group in the middle which are neither liberal or conservative but rather confused .
It is the confused people who are the determiners of many elections .
They have no evidence to base a decision on but do so without hesitation during an election .
This keeps the two sides at odds with one another .
Because we know both sides can not be correct which means one side is wrong .
Based on a point system giving points for accuracy I tend to support the liberal movement even though one issue divides and separates from them .
At what point does life begin .
I along with many in the medical community understand that left undisturbed and allowed to reach its full potential barring any medical problems that might occur or the abuse of chemicals by the host body that life begins at the moment that cells begin to communicate and divide and that moment is at conception .
This is not a religious tenant of mine since I am an atheist and while I respect peoples rights to freedom of choice when it comes to religion I also feel that we need to have treatment centers for those who have become addicted to religion to the point it affects their life .
Similar to alcoholics who consume to much alcohol each day we have people that are trapped in religion with no hope of getting out except treatment .
Delusional beliefs from a bottle or a pulpit are dangerous to mans destiny and potential .
Since each group is rooted deeply in what is and is not morally correct and what is and is not the role of government the two sides will never come together .
They will however agree praying that a 20 mile wide meteor headed for earth might not work all by itself and that the hand of God my guide man to force a change in the path of the object by mechanical and chemical means based on the laws of Physics . Although I would love to test the faith of people by saying that their is nothing that science can do and its up to you folks to pray it away and see how many of them demand action be taken .
