I have heard people say that humans use only ten percent of their mental capacity.

If this is true, what is preventing us from using the remaining ninety percent?

We use different areas of our brain for different tasks, i think what is meant is we only use 10-20% of our brains at any one time even when performing highly complex tasks.

Also the brain is like a muscle and functions with greater ease and efficiency if regularly given strenuous workouts. Exercising the brain greatly decreases the synaptic spaces between the neurons enabling rapid information transmission.

Us...true, we ourselves are preventing ourselves from using the other ninety percent...nowadays people are too busy to find what really lies within them. I can easily say however we have improved a lot in this area. Wasn't there a time when human use 1 perent of their brain?

This is a popular myth. There is no real evidence to suggest that people only use ten percent of their mental capacity.
