...if there is no more room in the rest of the train?

Or is there some sort of loophole that would allow me to travel First Class without paying for the privilege?

There is no law that permits a person to occupy First Class accommodation if he has paid for Second Class. The contract with the provider of the service requires that you are transported between the relevant places, and no more than that. There is no obligation on the company to provide you with a seat.

The 'loophole' in the UK is to book well in advance, when first class advance purchase seats can be had for a few pounds only more than standard... however no, theoretically if second class is full, you have to stand - there is nothing to say you must be seated in first.

I doubt it. The train company can choose to exclude certain people from sitting in certain parts of the train if they wish to.

If you try to flout the rules, the only thing likely to happen is you getting into an argument with an employee, and irritating other passengers.

If you want to travel first class you pay for it, end of story.

If you don't want to pay for it you should just accept economy class (if they manage to fill up economy and have seats left in first they may put some economy class passengers in first although it's not something you should count on).
