That's just like if you say something negative about your family members and another person says something about your family member you will get mad. Why because you don't want them to talk bad about them even though you just said something about your family member. Of course we can admit the truth. Why not? The thing about why we get offended when someone else says something bad about our country is because 95% of the people who says something negative don't even live here or never even visited the United States. they just go on sterotypes of how Americans are, which the majority of the time are not true. And another thing you will also get offened if someone says something about your country. Its not an American thing Its a human thing. Im sure it happens in every country as well.

It is totally common human behavior...it usually starts with siblings....it works like this....I can smack my brother around all day long....but the minute you try to smack him I'm going to get you. Why, because he's my brother.
It's our nation, we do disagree with alot of things here, but naturally we feel defensive when people that we perceive know very little about the actual citizens here start to criticize.
The question usually start something like this "why do all American woman...." or "don't you think Americans are the _____ people in the world"
It's easy to provoke a hostile response when the question or statement includes a gross generalization.

I live in the Philippines now and am an American.
I hear both good and bad about America and accept all of it.
It seems they have the same gripes about our country as we do.
America is overbearing here the same as they are at home and try to control all that goes on if they can by holding money out or making threats if this country doesn't behave!

That is very true.
I am an American and I personally couldn't give a sweet **** what you say about this country.
It is your opinion and you are entitled to it. That is the American way..whether I like it our not...and since I agree with you then i guess that it is MY opinion as well.

Yes it is common practice for us. What I don't like are the people from other countries that live and work here, talk about how much better their country is. I say, if it is so much better, why are they here instead of their own country.

If your brother or sister came over your house and said, " You know something, mom is a real b*tch!", you would probably wonder if they had a fight or wonder what happened to cause your sibling to make such a statement.
If I am a distant neighbor who lives in the next town and I come over your house and say, " You know something, your mother is a real b*tch!" , you would punch my lights and defend your mother's honor even if she is a b*tch.
You get my point, it is not just Americans who do this . . . everyone does it, even you.

It is like family. You can personally complain and fuss about a family members behavior, but let an outsider do so and it puts you into defensive mode. Most Americans feel this way. We live it, we know it, we do complain about it, but it is ours so we also defend it.
Peace.

It is a normal reaction for someone being able to criticize a possession of heir own but being annoyed at an OUTSIDER who says the same thing. It is a matter of protection

the truth of the matter is we are not the only country that does such things. Also, we may love our country but not the one running it at the moment... Big Difference!
