wicks can be made by twisting cotton string or different size twine. You then must dip them in wax to coat the string and this helps with keeping the wick lit. Unless you just want to make your own wicks for experience, you can purchase all sizes of wicking materials from candle suppliers very inexpensively. Depending on the size of candle you make will have a big difference on the size of wick you use.

I have had that happen many times, with home made and store bought candles. It has some thing to do with the wick itself. As long as you are in agreement with what your boyfriend wants out of the court proceeding, it shouldn't break the spell, I would go ahead and light the candle.
