Photos keep duplicating when I try to erase them. Can U help?

I'm running Windows XP and have tried deleting in batches while holding down the Control key, deleting singly, dragging into a folder and deleting that, using the left and right-click options etc., but I now have hundreds of unwanted photographs.

Same thing happens to me. Don't hold the control key, but release it and press it again when you select the next picture; then they won't duplicate.
