Every time I read a newspaper or watch the t.v. there seems to be a lot of killings going on in the UK. What is happening to this country?

Pardon the sarcasm, but -

Of course we are getting to be just like the USA, in all ways cultural, political, spiritual and legal. I mean, just look at your example - deaths as a result of gunshot.

In 2004 - the last year for which full statistics (issued by CDDC - see http://webapp.cdc.gov/cgi-bin/broker.exe) are available, 29,569 human beings died as a result of the use of firearms in the USA, which has a population of 299,400,000. In 2004/2005 (ie April 2004 - March 2005) in the UK - population 60,580,000 - there were 73 deaths due to the use of firearms. (http://www.crimeinfo.org.uk/servlet/factsheetservlet?command=viewfactsheet&factsheetid=102&category=factsheets).

So, the USA killed 1 in 10,125 of their population by gunshot, while in the UK we popped a total of 1 in 829,863 clogs (allowing one clog per person for the sake of the euphemism) by the same method.

Oh, yes, we are really travelling down the US road on gun use, that's fer sher.

No you are not getting like Americans. In America we allow the law abiding to be armed to defend themselves and while I admit that there has been a spike in the last year, we have had a downward trend in violent crime for ten years. 40 states now have "shall issue" concealed carry laws and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that criminals prefer unarmed victims.

In England, your government has gone through pains to make sure that all of you are unarmed. I also understand that if you report more than 5 crimes against yourself in a given time frame, the 6th and up are not even reported. So crime may be much worse than it looks.

Good luck

I hate to say this but it does seem like the UK is getting more like the US. Probably because of the media and all the TV people watch.
A lot of TV shows have violence in them.
TV shows should not show that.

Stop watching the telly or reading a newspaper then. You don't honestly believe what they say.

Definately not getting more like the US. If you were, you wouldn't tolerate being stripped of the right and the means to self-defense.
