Actually, I do not believe Bell HIMSELF had a hearing problem. But his wife and mother were deaf, and it was this that drew him to research hearing and speech, and then to experiment with hearing devices.

(Of course, another factor in his interest in speech was that many of his family members --father, grandfather, uncle-- were experts on elocution. . . and his father encouraged his studies in this area. Indeed, Bell, like his father, taught in the area of speech. He was"professor of Vocal Physiology and Elocution" at the Boston University School of Oratory)

~He was gay but at the same time he was homophobic to the point of paralysis when in the company of men. Although a weakness, this picadillo caused him to spend most of his time in the lab where he could avoid his male compatriots. But for his fear of intimate male relationships, he would never have been able to devote as much time to his scientific accomplishments. The one notable exception is the "Jenny " airplane. Had Homer Aldrich not been coming on to Bell during his stay at "The National Geographic", Bell would never have fled to Hammondsport, New York and Glenn Curtis to develop the airplane. Had Bell run sooner and faster, Curtis would have beaten the Wrights into the air. Had Curtis not been involved with Joe Meade at the time, he may have been able to get Bell to Keuka Lake a few years sooner and the "Cradle of Aviation" would be Champlain Beach instead of Kitty Hawk. So it goes.
