I think it's vital that children get an understanding of how the people ARE the government. I show my children, I don't just preach it. I take them with me when I vote, I take them to rallies for the causes I believe in, they helped me campaign for a local representative last fall because he was a teacher they knew. I hope to guide them to become involved, informed citizens, just like my parents did for me.

I'm not a political commentator, nor am I American. I do think it is important not only to know about the workings of your own government, but how they specifically (and therefore the people on a more general level) interact with others on the planet.

One fine example is: there is supposedly a 'special relationship' between the UK and the US, how did this come into being - does it in fact exist? or is it possibly a figment of the political imagination? How does America get on with other countries, with other belief systems, with other peoples? The getting along part can also reflect internally - how are people in America treated? Are they all treated the same or do some receive better treatment than others? The list of political questions and examples to get your children thinking of how the real-world works for governments - the secret is that they need to fully justify their answers.

A lot of politicians tend to make policies that they fail to deliver on when in a position of power - why is that? Does the fact that they can only see the big picture once in a position of power change their outlook...

If you want to make a big impact on your children as to how all governments work - tax their pocket money and other income :D

Get your children to calculate how much they are paid by the hour (if we assume you give them a fixed amount. Include the costs of the other features of staying with mum and dad - renting a room; washing services; phone calls; electricity and gas; petrol costs; chauffeur charges...etc.

This might serve to emphasise the level of investment made by all parents in their children. Compare the situation at home with that in another country where a child has to go to work at the age of say 12 - with a partial education system.

I could go on - but I'm sure you get my point

I live in Thailand but am an American. There is currently a coup gov't here. It's a mess; God bless America. Yes, I teach my children about government and really everything; I homeschool them.

Good question!

A good school will do the teaching so that the parents don't have to repeat everything.
