Some of the following ideas may help:
1. Establish a relaxing nighttime routine, just as you would for an infant who is struggling. Try taking a hot bubble bath while reading a good book and listening to relaxing music.
2. Make your environment more conducive to sleep by setting the thermostat at a comfortable temperature and reducing distracting light and noises.
3. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, and try not to sleep longer than needed (7-8 hours).
4. Try avoiding naps, so you are more tired at night.
5. Exercise regularly. Most sources say not to exercise too vigorously too close to bedtime, but you may find, as I have, that exercising moderately right before bedtime actually contributes to a good night’s rest.
6. Use your bed only for sleep and intimacy.
7. Listen to relaxing music or to a CD or sound machine that has a variety of relaxing sounds, music, or “white noise.”
8. If you are lying in bed and your mind is going 100 miles an hour, try to “erase and replace” your racing thoughts with a song or pleasant memory. Think of a few good things that happened that day, and why they happened. If you have an idea that you cannot get out of your head, let it go by writing it down, and think of something more relaxing.
9. If you have not fallen asleep for more than 30 minutes, get up and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy.
Ideally, try to get a good night’s rest without having to rely on a pill. But if all else fails, you may have to take medicine.

I have struggled with this all my life, it is 3:45 am as I write , I went to bed at 7:30 pm. I try to go to bed at a normal time, play the ocean tapes, drink nothing caffeinated after 1:00 in the afternoon. But still some nights are long and I am exhausted the next day. I do take otc sleep aid when it get bad.

I used to suffer from nighttime anxiety, where I'd be up all night. This was 12 years ago. I'm an expert at this. First, the basics:
1) Sleeping is a natural thing- your body wants to sleep
2) The only answer is to learn about yourself, and how your thoughts influence you.
3) Taking something- anything, whether it's a drug, herb, vitamin, and wating to fall asleep, will dissappoint you.
4) Don't worry about losing sleep. It's the worrying over it that makes you feel crappy the next day. If you don't sleep, screw it.
5) You will get over whatever "crisis" it is that's causing this, and sleep, because it's the natural thing to do.
I recommend Meditation. Close your eyes, watch your breath, etc. there's tons of stuff on the net about how to do this. Watch your thoughts come and go. Do it a while and you get good at it. The idea is to observe your mind -see your thoughts for what they are.3
Good luck

In addition to the other great suggestions listed already, try heating some water up in your microwave and putting 1 drop of chamomile oil and geranium oil and placing the cup in your bedroom. These are also great sleep aids in addition to lavender. A cup of chamomile tea at night before bedtime is also helpful in promoting sleep.

4-6 hours w/an infant is pretty good sleep. Normal is only 6-8 for people. If you take a nap in the afternoon you'll do fine. Ask your MD what they think if you're concerned as well. Sometimes time management and help with a new baby are all that is needed. Go for the Mommy breaks (Ask others u trust if they'd like the privlege of entertaining your infant).

Here's what you need to do... Make your room very dark and quiet. Lay down on your bed and have a good long stretch. Find the sweet spot, close your eyes and take a deep breath. As you exhale, relax your toes and feet. Keep breathing deeply and, with each exhale, relax the next part... ankles, calves, knees, thighs... each part, all the way up. If you're not asleep by the time you reach your head, change positions and start again. Personally, I'm usually out cold before I reach my lower back. Good luck... sweet dreams.

the link below helps to explain better, but lavender oil is your best friend when it comes to sleep. you can put a little on your pillow, put some in a warm bath, or maybe on the outside of an eye mask. try to find organic lavender oil if you can but it's not necessary.
Also, I like to eat a small spoonful of peanut butter, knock me out fast.
