You can legally own stock the moment you are born. To buy a stock, however, you have to have a contractual relationship, and since minors can't make contracts, no broker will let minors open accounts. Someone else has to buy the stock and give it to the minor, or else set up a trust fund account for the minor.

First response is correct. It is done using the Uniform Gift to Minors Act, and I used it to give some stock to my children. Your brokerage will be able to assist with details.
