From AP report of fighting in Baghdad today:

The military first reported eight dead, then raised the figure to 18, but later returned to the lower figure, explaining that the changes were due to confusion on the battlefield.

Bleichwehl said all the dead had been "identified as hostile" and there was "no collateral damage," the U.S. term for civilian casualties.

But Iraqi police and hospital officials said the dead included a woman and a young boy. Sixteen other people were wounded, including four women and three boys in their early teens who had been sleeping on the roofs to escape the summer heat, an official at Noor Hospital in Shula said.

The Iraqi officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release such information.

Curious to see what people think...

Yes, this is what this war is about. The US has no idea how to fight a war such as this and the collateral damage is huge.

I wouldn't doubt that many civilians are harmed daily in Baghdad if they live in the middle of the areas where conflicts are taking place. I would hope that all "collateral damage" is accidental or unintentional, but I'm sure there are always more casualties than reported. The fighting over there is a horrible thing right now, but unfortunately I don't think it is going to stop anytime soon.

I have no clue. Sometimes people injured in such incident can die days later. That can change deaths count in matter of days or hours. With many others getting injured in Iraq constantly it will be pretty dang confusing to count heads in chaotic ill-equiped Iraqi hospital.

Fair to speculate if US army is lying or mistaken. Pat Tillman thing damaged US army credibility. And other incidents too(Abu Grahb...etc..etc.). But to be fair Iraq is not the best place to get accurate numbers like that. You got people flooding into hospitals daily. From attacks all over the country. Very confusing and very chaotic.

Why else would they announce that? We are a Country who's citizens care about life and the lives of the innocent. "WE ARE THOSE THEY SACRIFICE" If they announced the truth of the matter, they would not only lose more support alot faster than normal, they would be giving us more proof for what most of us already know. This government is corrupt and what sucks, is that they are bringing us along for the ride. Don't get me wrong, I love my Country, but I detest those who've ruined it. Money has become more important than life for these people, and it's sad..really really sad.

My heart goes out to the Soldiers who are in harms way but continue to fight for what they believe in, and for the innocent lives this war has taken.

Have you even been on a battlefield Steven? I have, the confusion is great. There is smoke, noise, people are screaming, gunfire and shells going off. People are getting wounded and killed. It happens, one General said"War is hell" and he was telling it with kids gloves on.
I was on a chopper going into a hot zone. The man next to me was hit with a AK-47 bullet in th foot, he screamed because the bullet went up his leg ricocheted against his kneecap and, then his thigh, shattering his thigh and then up the inside of his rib cage and out his shoulder.
The chopper was smoking and spinning, we were thrown out as it came down hard, men running as we were being shot.
The "First" wanted a headcount but, you couldn't see anything but smoke, blood from the wounded and yelling for help, as I run for cover I was hit twice.

In the end, almost every man was hit. The chopper went down and the pilots killed, We didn't even know who was hit and who made it. That was war in 'Nam.

I don't think anyone was lying like your implying, I think they just couldn't get an accurate count, it happens, they're worrying about their men, not civilians, this is left to the locals who are pretty inept at arithmetic and usually tell them what they want to know, not the facts.

It is the same "truth" that was told during Viet Nam war. The difference is that the media outlets are now part of the propaganda machine for the pentagon/ Bush/ Cheney

By now we know for sure that we are not going to get the truth from our government. Even the war was based on lies. They only let us know what they want us to know.
